Batata Vada


Batata Vada is a popular Maharashtrian food, which goes very well as snack or light breakfast. One interesting fact is "Batata" is actually a Portuguese word meaning potato. Apparently Potatoes were introduced in India by Portuguese and hence this name. Made from boiled and mashed potatoes and deep fried and usually served with green coriander chutney.


Ingredients for batata 

2 cup boiled and mashed potatoes
1/2 small bowl chopped onion
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
10 to 15 curry leaves
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 tablespoon chopped green chili
1 tablespoon chopped ginger
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder
1/2 tablespoon cumin powder
1/2 tablespoon garam masala powder
1 cup oil for deep fry

Ingredients for Batter

1 cup gram flour
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon dry mango powder
4 to 5 tablespoon water

Method

Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a pan and add black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chopped onion, chopped ginger, garlic and green chili. Roast it for 1 to 2 mins.



Add boiled and mashed potatoes in it and mix well .




Add all dry spices in it and mix well .



Add green chopped coriander and curry leaves in it and mix well



Prepare thick batter from the above batter ingredients.



Prepare small balls of these fried Potatoes masala and dip in the above batter.
Deep fry in heated oil till color turns brown and serve with any kind of Chutney.
