Modak

Modak is a traditional Maharashtra sweet dish, generally offered to Load Ganesha as a pooja offering on occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. Some time it is also cooked as steamed Modak but below I am presenting the recipe of deep fried Modak.

Ingredients:

1 Cup coconut grated
1 tablespoon poppyseeds
1 tablespoon cardamoms powder
1/2 cup jaggery
1/2 cup dry fruits finely chopped
2 Cup rawa
2 cup milk
1/2 cup all purpose flour
4 tablespoon ghee
1 pinch of salt

Method:

Heat 2 tablespoon ghee in pan on low flame and add grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits, green cardamom, poppy seeds and milk in it, keep stirring it on low flame for 15 to 20 min,

Jaggery will melt first, cook this coconut -jaggery mixture till the the moisture from jaggery begins to dry

Switch off the flame and keep the filling aside to cool

In a bowl take rawa, all purpose flour, tablespoon ghee and 1 Pinch of salt and mix properly, then add little milk and kneed firm dough.

Make small balls from the dough and dust the rolling board with flour/ghee. Roll each ball with the rolling pin to small circle.

With your fingertip, apply water all over the circumference edge, then place about 1 tbsp of modak filling on the center.

Try to assemble and fold it as modak shape.

Heat refined oil in a deep frying pan having a thick base, then gently slide the modak in oil, turn them over carefully and fry properly till golden color.

Remove from oil keep on kitchen towel to drain excess oil .

Now Modak is ready for Pooja.
