Black Channa Masala

Black Channa Masala 

A black channa masala is very popular recipe in most of the Indian homes.Black channa masala is made with onion and tomato based gravy and is mildly spiced.Black channa masala best with Puri/ Paratha.


1 cup black channa (soaked overnight)
2-3 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
1 teaspoon chopped ginger
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1 teaspoon chopped green chili
1/2 cup oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
2 bay leaves
2 greean and black cardomon
1 small bowl chopped onion
1 small bowl chopped tomato


  1. Boil a mixture of - ½ small bowl onion, 1 small bowl tomato, ginger chopped and garlic chopped in ½ cup water for 10 min. Once it is cold, make a paste in to the mixer-grinder.
  2. Heat oil in a presser cooker, put chopped onions. After the onion has become light brown add above paste and mix properly.
  3. Add- Salt , Turmeric powder, red chilly, jeera powder and garam masala powder and mix properly. Once it has become semi roasted, add- black channa in to the masala and fry for 15 min.
  4. While it is getting cooked, in a separate bowl/pan boil a cup of water with - whole garam masala and ½ tea spoon sugar. Cover it with lid. 
  5. Add this boiled water and the contents in the pressure cooker and let it whistle for 4 times.
  6. Once your Black channa gets cooked, garnish it with Coriander leaves and serve with Butter / Ghee / Plane roti.
